Have you ever thought about soil? That dirt beneath your feet sustains life each and every day because it is the medium we use to grow the food and clothes we need. Soil has been around a very long time. In fact, soil has always been present, though it is continually being lost and formed. The soil where you live has unique characteristics, shaped by climate, organisms, relief (or topography), parent material, and time. ClORPT for short!

Soil characteristics are important to know if you want to plant a garden or grow food. Just as we care for our personal health by eating the right foods and getting plenty of nutrients, we also need to take care of our soil by doing many of the same things! As you will soon learn, Not all Soils are Created Equal!
